Where We Eat – Brutto in Farringdon…again!

Last year, to celebrate our birthday, we took ourselves off for a meal at Brutto in Farringdon. We worked our way through about half the menu, drank some excellent wine and, all things considered, had a very enjoyable afternoon!

We wrote about it back then, which you can read here, but what we really loved about Brutto was the way the restaurant felt like it knew exactly what it was all about.

That sense of a loud, buzzy room where everyone is having a good time was a real inspiration to us. It reminded us that we get to decide what we want our restaurant to be and that, whilst we need to strike a balance between what our guests want from us and what we want to provide, it’s not quite as simple as “the guest is always right”.

Brutto is unashamedly loud, it doesn’t serve fish and it makes no apology for either. What it wants to be is a classic Florentine trattoria and the choices they make reflect the fact that they know exactly what they are aiming for!

Back in January we popped back for a quick lunch on a cold Tuesday and had a light meal at the counter…it was, as we had hoped, just as good as ever!

The maltagliati with ox cheek was sensational, the grilled artichokes were perfect, but best of all was the side dish of cannellini beans simmered in broth and finished with olive oil…simple pleasures!

Some places are worth returning to time and again and Brutto is absolutely one of them. If you’ve never been then you really should make the trip. It’s an absolute masterclass in crafting a clear identity and delivering it with confidence and style.
