Where We Eat: Hausu, Peckham

After a couple of days staring at spreadsheets and working through plans for the future, we were in need of a break.

So yesterday evening we took ourselves off for dinner in Peckham.

There is always a slight hesitation about eating in Peckham. There's plenty of good food...but so often it's let down by service that doesn't quite match the ambition of the kitchen. Last night though, on the recommendation of a trusted friend, we skipped our usual fallback (The Kerfield) and headed to Hausu, just beneath Peckham Rye station.

It was excellent!

We sat at the counter and watched the chefs work. Precise, considered small plates...of which the lamb ribs were the undisputed star. Then a main course that practically leapt off the menu and demanded to be ordered. Chicken, girolles, sweetcorn, jalapeño and buttered chicken sauce….I mean come on! And since we're being thorough...crispy potatoes with miso confit garlic was not too shabby either!

It was exactly the restorative dinner we needed!

Sitting at a counter with a good bottle of wine, watching a busy kitchen and talking about how we'd do things if we had your own restaurant...that used to be one of our favourite things to do.

Last night we had to remind ourselves that we do have our own restaurant.

Yes, it's hard. Yes, the numbers are challenging. But this is what we chose. And we're lucky to have the chance to do it.

Sometimes that's worth remembering!
